Kamal hates the word "Kollywood"
February 23rd, 2009
Kamal Hassan has made it clear that he hates the word "Kollywood" to describe the Tamil film industry!
At the inauguration of Kalaignar TV's new 24 hour Tamil comedy channel Siripoli, one of the speakers referred to Tamil films as 'Kollywood'.
Later when Kamal Hassan who was the chief guest of the evening spoke he said that if there's one thing he hates, it's the word "Kollywood".
The reason, Kamal explained: "Please don't use the term Kollywood. You can call it Chennai films or Tamil film industry. During my younger days, my father used to say doesn't be a Kallipayan (a chap who walks around aimlessly, a timepass guy). The K-wood word remains me of it."
Amitabh Bachchan in his biography has also said that he hates the Hindi film industry being called Bollywood. He says it's just a word coined to describe an industry that's a poorer (you can take that in any sense you want to) version of Hollywood.
