The Multiple-Starr er Trend Begin Again In Tamil Movies

May 13, 2009

When two established stars with distinct styles and niche audiences come together for a movie, it is indeed a treat for movie-lovers. But making a film with these two top stars is not an easy task for the film’s makers. However, if we look back, the two-star trend is not new to Tamil cinema; the fact is we haven’t seen many two-hero projects in the recent past. Only a few multi-hero films like Chandramukhi, Pammal.K. Sambandam, Pithamagan have been made.

In earlier times, making films with two big stars was a frequent exercise; most movies that had more than one hero or heroine also had a strong story line. Thus stars worked together for the cause of the strong story and good characterizations. That also effaced any sort of image clash between the lead actors. But as time went by, the scenario changed. The increase in fan clubs is one prime reason for the change. Fans’ expectations began to influence changes in story lines. So it became difficult for film makers to make multi-starrers with top stars. Except in Mani Ratnam’shigh-budget multilingual productions, seeing two established stars in one movie became a rarity.

But now, a significant change is being observed. Unnai Pol Oruvan brings Kamal Haasan and Mohanlal on the same screen. The movie also boasts of Oscar-winner Resul Pookutty as part of its crew. Kamal’s daughter, upcoming singer and actress Shruthi Haasan, is making her debut as music composer through the movie. A remake of the Hindi blockbuster A Wednesday, Unnai Pol Oruvan is also being remade in Telugu with Kamal Haasan and Venkatesh in lead roles. Another double-hero film is Pazhassi Raja to be released in Tamil and Malayalam, starring Mammootty and Sarathkumar in lead roles. The film marks the Malayalam debut of Sarath. It also stars Suman, well known actor in the Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam film industries.
